Operation Palliser’s offshore reserve

Britain’s Sierra Leone response paired a lightly equipped immediate force with heavier capability offshore, enabling a seamless handover and time to prepare later operations.

Notes

Operation Palliser began with a lightly equipped Parachute Regiment response, made viable because an amphibious ready group was already moving with heavier equipment and additional personnel. HMS Illustrious brought Sea Harriers and Sea Kings, while HMS Ocean carried 42 Commando and more helicopter lift. Together the two battalion-sized manoeuvre groups amounted to a light brigade option, not an isolated company expected to survive alone. Keeping the Royal Marines postured at sea preserved an acclimatised reserve that could intervene if necessary while supporting the force already on land. The handover bought time to train, repair, and shape the longer commitments that led to Operations Khukri and Barras.
