Vichy officers confront Britain's refusal to quit

Dakar's commanders had expected Britain to seek peace after France fell, making continued British resistance both strategically and psychologically difficult to interpret.

Notes

Some senior French officers had predicted that Britain would leave the war within three or four weeks of France's collapse. Britain's continued resistance complicated the outlook of men who had only recently been its allies. They could admire the British decision to keep fighting while also wondering whether France had accepted defeat too soon. The position was less straightforward than that of governments whose countries were fully occupied and whose legitimacy therefore rested clearly outside Axis control. Vichy resistance at Dakar grew out of recent defeat, wounded alliance politics, and uncertainty about the war's direction.
