Operation Menace was poorly planned and depended too heavily on the expectation that Dakar would declare for de Gaulle. HMAS Australia, Cumberland, and other ships suffered damage, while six Swordfish were lost without achieving the political objective. These costs were soon overshadowed by other Allied operations, but the failure struck directly at de Gaulle's claim that he could rally French territories to Free France. Dakar intensified factional competition and fear within the movement because his authority had rested heavily on promises he could not yet fulfill. One interpretation also links Boisson's later punishment to his role in frustrating de Gaulle at this vulnerable moment; the connection remains a judgment rather than a settled verdict.
