Why Operation Menace disappears from amphibious histories

A broad history of amphibious warfare omits Dakar even as it covers campaigns from Sea Lion to the later Pacific war.

Notes

Operation Menace is absent from a large reference history of amphibious assault even though the book covers Sea Lion, Claymore, Torch, Husky, and later Pacific campaigns. Dakar belongs in that history because it exposes problems in coalition command, political assumptions, landing-craft provision, and assaulting a fortified port. Its association with Free France may have helped push it outside familiar British operational narratives. The omission also shows how a failed and politically awkward operation can disappear from a broad campaign history.
