Revenge led a destroyer and motor-gunboat strike force against invasion barges while cruisers and another destroyer group covered against German naval interference. RAF bombers attacked and dropped flares to illuminate Cherbourg, making the operation a coordinated air-sea bombardment. Revenge fired 120 15-inch rounds in 18 minutes, more main-battery shells than she had used at Jutland, while her escorts added 801 rounds of 4.7-inch fire. The force withdrew undamaged under German coastal artillery. That lack of damage casts doubt on claims that the coastal fire was accurate and sustained, since shells landing near the force did not hit or damage it. Revenge still made about 21.5 knots at 25 years old, matching or slightly exceeding her original design speed.
