Operation MB8 as a web of simultaneous commitments

Operation MB8 combined Greek, Malta, and Mediterranean Fleet movements with raids and convoy escorts, showing how many distinct tasks ran at once.

Notes

Operation MB8 placed the Taranto strike inside a much larger traffic plan. Convoy AN6 moved four slow tankers from Egypt to Greece while Force B, built around HMS Ajax and HMAS Sydney, and Vice Admiral Pridham-Wippell's HMS Orion operated nearby. MW3 moved three empty merchant vessels from Alexandria to Malta with HMS Coventry, HMS Terror, and a disputed destroyer element, while ME3 returned four vessels in ballast to Alexandria. Operation Coat brought HMS Barham, HMS Berwick, HMS Glasgow, and destroyers toward Malta and the Mediterranean Fleet as HMS Ark Royal's Operation Crack struck Sardinia. Together, these movements formed a web of commitments around the harbour attack at the operation's centre.
