Husky's task forces become Eighth Army and Seventh Army

Planning designations map onto the armies that fought in Sicily, while Montgomery's insistence on the Eighth Army name connects unit identity with morale.

Notes

British and American formations invaded Sicily, with Canadian troops joining the British contingent. Montgomery's eastern force was designated Force 545, while Patton commanded the western Force 343. Alexander's overall command was Force 141, with the formations becoming Eighth Army, US Seventh Army and Fifteenth Army Group. The British element had been intended to take the title Twelfth Army, but Montgomery argued for retaining Eighth Army because of its value to morale.
