Operation Husky began on 10 July 1943 with infantry and airborne landings supported by naval gunfire and aircraft. Waterproofed tanks followed from landing craft tank once the infantry were ashore. Their weight created a transport problem that could not be solved by breaking the load into manageable pieces as with some earlier equipment. The book's 1940 development date is challenged by tracing Royal Navy interest in moving tanks ashore back to 1916 or 1917.
