The volunteers faced death during the raid and after capture, even while operating in uniform. British intelligence had learned of Hitler's Commando Order soon after it was issued on 18 October 1942, so planners and raiders could not dismiss that danger as unknowable. Success still exposed the crews to drowning, detection, and a long escape through occupied France, while surrender offered no lawful protection under the German order. That known risk is essential to understanding the raiders' courage and the responsibilities borne by Combined Operations.
