A modern film or television adaptation might struggle to do Operation Frankton justice without manufacturing romance or other dramatic devices. The history already contains courage, moral difficulty, and complicated people liable to be misunderstood. Compressing that material into a conventional heroic plot could flatten both the admirable and troubling parts of the story. The raid deserves attention as complex history rather than only as the basis for The Cockleshell Heroes.
