Joshua Levine's account follows Caroli and Wulf Schmidt through preparation for their missions in Britain. Their training covered Morse, ciphers, meteorology, recognition and camouflage, with reports expected on aircraft, troop movements, production and morale. Caroli's first attempted flight returned to the continent, while his subsequent parachute arrival left him injured by the wireless set strapped to his chest. He missed his scheduled transmission and was discovered by local civilians, who handed him to the police. MI5 already had warning of an incoming agent through its existing contacts. Before trying to use Caroli as a double agent, his interrogator checked whether he had managed to communicate with Hamburg before capture.
