Chapter · 52:13-56:38

Operation EF and the costly northern carrier raids

The politically driven raids on Kirkenes and Petsamo lost surprise and sixteen British aircraft for limited damage.

Notes

Victorious and Furious were sent north to demonstrate support for the Soviet Union after Operation Barbarossa and attack ports linked to northern supply routes, despite Home Fleet objections. German reconnaissance cost the raids surprise, allowing fighters to devastate the Kirkenes force even though it sank one ship and set another on fire. The distant Fulmar escorts also lacked the radar direction that normally helped them use their strengths, while the Petsamo attack achieved only minor damage. With sixteen British aircraft lost, thirteen personnel killed, and twenty-five captured, the outcome reflects failed political and operational judgment rather than proof that the Albacore itself was worthless.
