Operation Collar carried important supplies from Gibraltar to Malta near the end of November 1940. Its passage coincided with the Battle of Cape Spartivento on 27 November, a little over two weeks after the British carrier strike on Taranto. The Italian fleet was still able and willing to contest Mediterranean movements after the damage at Taranto. The battle places the raid within a continuing convoy campaign and shows that the Regia Marina remained an operational threat.
