Operation Chariot and the cost of sacrificing Campbeltown

The Saint-Nazaire raid removed an important dry dock, but sacrificing Campbeltown also consumed a destroyer hull needed for Atlantic escort work.

Question

What is your favourite example of a Royal Navy idea that actually worked?

Short answer

Operation Chariot destroyed an important dry dock, although sacrificing Campbeltown is criticized because her hull was also needed for Atlantic escort work.

Notes

Operation Chariot achieved the useful destruction of the Saint-Nazaire dry dock through a courageous attack. The objection is to using Campbeltown as a bomb when the Battle of the Atlantic demanded every available escort hull. That criticism also extends to commemorating such a use through the naming of a later ship. Eliminating the dock reduced part of the German surface threat, but this assessment holds that the destroyer might have been more useful elsewhere.
