Rabaul served as a Japanese logistical hub capable of supporting operations across the island chains toward Australasia. Rather than mount one enormous direct assault, Allied forces built routes and bases forward through repeated landings involving American, Australian, and New Zealand formations. Operation Cherry Blossom put the Third Marine Division ashore at Empress Augusta Bay as one step in that advance. American Army and Marine formations had distinct service cultures but still had to cooperate inside the same campaign. These smaller amphibious operations show how limited forces could be landed, reconstituted, and reused under realistic constraints.
