Operation C, the Japanese raid into the Indian Ocean, was well conducted and also a missed Allied opportunity. Japanese forces operated far beyond the area where they could be properly supported, creating the conditions for an intelligence-led trap. That trap did not materialise because Allied intelligence had not yet caught up with Japanese operations. By Midway it had, allowing the Americans to exploit a comparable exposure even though Operation MI itself was better supported than the Indian Ocean raid. Distance from support made an otherwise effective raid vulnerable if its opponents could anticipate it.

Operation C exposed the limits of Japanese support
The 1942 Indian Ocean raid succeeded, but its distance from support could have made it a disaster if Allied intelligence had matured earlier.
