Operating an age-of-sail cannon

A gun-deck walkthrough shows why loading a naval cannon was a coordinated and hazardous crew task.

Notes

The video follows a gun crew from swabbing the barrel to loading powder, wad, and shot. The wet swab cleaned the bore and extinguished embers that might ignite a fresh charge prematurely. Powder could be loaded loose or in a cloth cartridge, while old sail and rope supplied wadding that helped seal the bore and held the ball in place when the muzzle was depressed. A second wad prevented the shot from rolling out before firing. Once loaded, the gun needed a full crew hauling on tackles to run its carriage against the bulwark, showing how much coordinated muscle the drill demanded. Powder monkeys could be very young boys for whom naval service offered food, shelter, and a possible career despite its dangers.
