Recognising an Arethusa by silhouette and gun layout

Widely separated funnels, an aft-weighted superstructure, and a raised quarterdeck turret distinguish the class while comparisons with other cruisers test the limits of silhouette recognition.

Notes

The ONI guide lists two widely separated upright funnels with teardrop cross-sections, a low silhouette, and superstructure set well aft. That aft arrangement gives the forward guns wider firing arcs, a feature used more strongly in the later Battle-class destroyers. The guide compares the Arethusa silhouette with Hobart, Dido, La Argentina, Fiji, Le Fantasque, London, and Southampton-class ships. Some likenesses seem more convincing than others, especially the Fiji class because its main armament has a similar layout. The comparison shows how recognition manuals grouped ships by visible proportions and gun arrangements even when the designs were not close relatives.
