One-off battlecruisers and design experimentation

The individual character of Queen Mary and Tiger makes battlecruisers a plausible place to look for a one-off design experiment.

Notes

Queen Mary and Tiger are treated as closely related but individually distinct designs rather than members of a rigidly uniform series. Later battlecruisers continued the process of iteration. That pattern makes a one-off triple-turret and oil-firing experiment easier to imagine within the procurement sequence. A tightly standardized production run would offer less room for such a trial. Documentary evidence is still needed before this possibility can be treated as a historical design.
