Perry-class frigates offered scalable American presence

Numerous, adaptable Perry-class frigates let the US Navy signal interest without sending a premier combatant to every crisis.

Notes

The Oliver Hazard Perry class was austere by US Navy standards, but its weapons, aviation space, and internal flexibility gave commanders useful choices. Building fifty-five for the United States and seventy-one overall made them available for duties that did not justify risking or politically signaling with an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. A Perry could therefore deliver a calibrated message: it was not America's premier combatant, but it demonstrated that heavier forces could follow. The class remained useful in war while being affordable enough to expose during peacetime conflict management. The wider alliance structure resembled what was later called the thousand-ship navy: allies supplied local presence while American ships covered the higher response tier.
