Digital distribution and preserving older computer games

Keeping an old game playable involves distribution, compatibility and choices about preserving its original appearance.

Notes

Digital distribution changes how older computer games can be found and played. Alex Clarke misses buying physical copies in secondhand shops and associates the decline of that market with services such as Steam. Glynn Stewart credits GOG with tracking down old games and making them work on modern computers, tasks players previously had to tackle themselves. A modern-compatible version of Starfleet Command also raises a question of presentation: Clarke accepts its sharper imagery as technically better while still preferring something about the original appearance.
