Older destroyers remained useful ASW and AA assets

Before new Hunt-class escorts arrived in numbers, First World War destroyers still covered anti-submarine and anti-aircraft duties and could receive older radar sets.

Notes

Force Z's mixed-age screen reflected what Britain could supply before Hunt-class and other wartime escorts entered service in large numbers. First World War destroyers were still useful despite their age. They could perform anti-submarine and anti-aircraft work after modernization. Radar also cascaded through the fleet: a newer destroyer might receive the latest set, allowing its first-generation unit to be installed aboard an older ship. The arrangement was imperfect, but it turned scarce electronics and veteran hulls into usable defensive capacity.
