Older ASW weapons and new underwater threats

Weapons designed for submarines may regain value when navies must confront a wider range of small and uncrewed underwater threats.

Notes

Anti-submarine rocket launchers could acquire a different use against small underwater drones. Their ability to put explosive charges into the water ahead of a ship offers a possible response to an approaching underwater threat. This proposed application differs from hunting a nuclear attack submarine, although the launchers were originally intended to address submarine threats. The reason for retaining them in service is presented as a possibility, rather than an established procurement explanation. The changing range of underwater targets prompts a reconsideration of these older weapons.
