Old roads as evidence of wartime transport and defenses

Surviving roadside defenses and the National Gallery's wartime evacuation show how older Welsh roads can reveal historical transport constraints.

Notes

Older roads can preserve traces of the wartime transport network and the defenses placed beside it. Following an A-road through Wales also makes the terrain visible in a way a later bypass does not. The National Gallery's movement of paintings into mountain storage offers a specific logistical example: large pictures had to pass along narrower and more winding roads without damage. Later widening of the A5 needs to be allowed for when using the present road to imagine that journey.
