The class remained useful late in the war because Okinawa demanded every available hull. More ships divided enemy attacks, increased the fleet's anti-aircraft fire, and added guns for shore bombardment. Their service with Task Force 54 demonstrates how an imperfect interwar design could retain operational value through endurance and accumulated capability. Okinawa became the class's last major opportunity to contribute because the planned invasion of Japan never followed.
