What an Okinawan advanced base needed to operate

Rapid base construction in the exercise still left weaknesses against bombardment and landing, while operations depended on substantial facilities at Singapore.

Notes

The exercise assumed the mobile naval base defense organization could protect an Okinawan harbor against submarines, destroyers, and aircraft within a week. Booms and minefields followed, but the guns remained inadequate against bombardment and the position could not repel a major amphibious assault. Cruisers and submarines would use the base to attack Japanese trade around Shanghai and the Yangtze. Singapore supplied the rear support in the scenario, with a protected anchorage, storage and repair facilities, 500,000 tons of oil fuel, and a 40,000-ton floating dock. These specified facilities show how much support the advanced force depended on even before considering the enemy fleet.
