Ogle and Knowles inherit a ruined Caribbean force

After Vernon and Wentworth blamed one another and were recalled, Chaloner Ogle rebuilt command in Jamaica while disease left little capacity for Charles Knowles's later coastal raids.

Notes

The Cartagena defeat did not end the organizational crisis in the Caribbean. Vernon and Wentworth blamed one another and were recalled in 1742, leaving Admiral Chaloner Ogle to take command and restore the Jamaica Station. Ogle appears as a workmanlike officer whose achievement was recovery rather than a celebrated fleet victory. By May 1742 about 90 percent of the dispatched army had died from combat or, overwhelmingly, disease, so Charles Knowles inherited only limited means for raids on the Venezuelan coast.
