The Battle class, Tone, Dunkerque, and Nelson all carried substantial capability outside their forward main batteries. Aft spaces could support aircraft, anti-aircraft guns, secondary surface weapons, torpedoes, or anti-submarine equipment. The same distinction persists in modern frigates and destroyers, where offensive launch cells may remain grouped while defensive missiles and close-in systems protect several arcs. All-forward armament is therefore better understood as functional zoning than as leaving the stern unarmed.

Offensive weapons forward, defensive weapons distributed
Apparent all-forward designs often concentrate their primary offensive weapons while distributing defensive guns, missiles, aviation, and escort systems across the rest of the hull.
