The Odyssey and the danger of sending one big ship

The loss of USS Odyssey becomes a force-package lesson: an uncertain threat calls for a balanced group, not a single prestigious capital ship.

Notes

Starfleet sends a very valuable Galaxy-class ship through the wormhole without an adequate supporting force, even though the Jem'Hadar have kidnapped a senior officer and demonstrated hostile intent. A smaller but capable vessel with escorts would have reduced the political cost of a loss, while a Galaxy deployment called for enough reinforcement to survive an unknown threat. Odyssey instead enters with three runabouts only because the Deep Space Nine crew insists on joining the rescue. Jem'Hadar weapons pass through its shields, and an attack ship destroys it during the withdrawal. The loss proves that Starfleet's most impressive ship can be defeated, turning a poor force package into a strategic signal of weakness as well as a material disaster.
