The Odon advance stalls under hard resistance

The 29th Armoured Brigade and Scottish infantry meet accurate artillery, worsening rain, and repeated attacks that fail to clear the route to the Odon.

Notes

After moving off, 29th Armoured Brigade meets resistance severe enough to halt the race toward the Odon bridges. Infantry of the 15th Scottish Division is committed, including 227th Highland Brigade, but accurate German artillery and worsening rain prevent a breakthrough. With aircraft again unable to support the ground troops, German forces retain the objectives and claim fifty British tanks destroyed. A renewed evening attack through woods and villages makes little progress and is discontinued. The episode shows how a planned armoured exploitation can become a costly combined-arms fight when terrain, weather, and enemy fire converge.
