Ocean models and anomaly detection around SSBNs

A cautious explanation of how ocean models might narrow submarine searches without making ballistic-missile submarines easy to locate.

Notes

Ocean modeling is presented as a theoretical way to narrow the search for submerged ballistic-missile submarines. Accurately predicting the sea would require enormous amounts of data because tectonic activity, marine life, and other environmental changes also produce anomalies. Identifying a shortlist of areas for further checking appears more plausible than declaring that a particular anomaly is definitely a submarine. The collision between British and French SSBNs, neither of which detected the other in time, illustrates how quiet these boats can be and why their ocean environment remains central to deterrent survivability.
