Trials may carry academic and journalistic observers

Navies sometimes invite historians, senior academics, and journalists aboard trials to provide outside viewpoints and communicate what the program is proving.

Question

Have any of the academic visits described here been formal ship trials?

Short answer

No. The embarked exercises discussed here were not trial events, although senior academics, historians, and journalists are sometimes invited aboard trials.

Notes

Observing a naval exercise differs from participating in a formal acceptance or development trial. Outside observers can help interpret and disseminate the work. Their presence does not turn every embarked academic visit into part of the test program.
