In June 1940 Nürnberg was left out of Operation Juno, the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sortie, and sent to Norway instead. There she hosted visiting Italian admirals and operated with German destroyers. She also helped escort battleships, including Gneisenau after a British submarine torpedo hit. These duties reflected a persistent shortage: too few German light cruisers had to divide their time among escort, minelaying, and support work.
