Chapter · 44:45-47:14

Nürnberg's reconnaissance role and wartime modernization

Nürnberg received radar, stronger anti-aircraft armament, and degaussing equipment while serving as a reconnaissance-force flagship and Baltic patrol ship.

Notes

Nürnberg's wartime alterations affected her aircraft and torpedo equipment, anti-aircraft battery, and protective degaussing coil. For periods she carried some of the most advanced radar and densest anti-aircraft firepower in the German cruiser force. Before the war she served as flagship of the German reconnaissance forces and flew Konteradmiral Hermann Boehm's flag during the Spanish non-intervention patrols. At the outbreak of war she joined the unsuccessful effort to prevent the Polish Navy escaping the Baltic and then conducted minelaying operations. Those assignments explain why she remained valuable as an adaptable fleet unit despite the class's design faults.
