Nuremberg as justice and a new international order

The Nuremberg trials served as criminal proceedings and an attempt to establish rules for the postwar world.

Notes

The Nuremberg trials cannot be understood solely as a process of retrospective justice. The proceedings also helped establish a new political and legal order in Europe and beyond. That wider purpose shaped which wartime acts could be prosecuted without exposing comparable Allied practices to the same standard. The point helps explain both Dönitz's limited sentence and the selective construction of postwar international law.
