Nuclear power and future naval weapons

Nuclear propulsion may ease the power-generation and storage problem posed by railguns, lasers, and other high-demand systems.

Question

Could nuclear power be necessary for future railguns and laser weapons at sea?

Short answer

It could be a strong solution because these weapons create demanding power-generation and energy-storage requirements that nuclear propulsion can address.

Notes

Nuclear power need not be a requirement for every combatant, but it becomes attractive when future weapons impose exceptional electrical demand. Railguns, coilguns, and lasers need large amounts of power, and storing that energy is itself a design challenge. A compact naval reactor could generate enough power in a dense installation to make those systems viable at sea. Pairing sustained generation with storage would give a future cruiser more freedom in how often and how intensively it uses these weapons.
