Early Standard Missile ER installations could guide one channel per SPG-55 fire-control radar. NTU gave each radar two channels after separate antennas took over the midcourse downlink, leaving terminal illumination as a shorter part of the engagement. Autopilot and command updates, paired with a more powerful booster and speed above Mach 3 on long-range shots, changed the engagement as much as the missile's peak speed. The refit also added armour to decks, missile-handling spaces, and doors. NTU altered guidance capacity and survivability across the ship, beyond fitting a new missile to an old launcher.
