Designed by Vulkan-Werke, Novik displaced 1,280 tons normally and 1,620 tons fully loaded, making her substantially larger than the earlier destroyers discussed. Her 37.3 knots on trials became about 36 knots in practice, and she could cover 2,000 nautical miles at 21 knots. Six water-tube boilers supplied turbines driving three shafts. Four single 4-inch guns, four twin 18-inch torpedo mountings, and capacity for 60 mines gave her a powerful armament.
