Chapter · 19:45-23:43

Nottingham from the Kiel display to Dogger Bank

Nottingham's prewar display at Kiel led into Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank, showing how the newest light cruisers operated beside battleships and battlecruisers.

Notes

Nottingham joined the Royal Navy's three newest cruisers and four newest battleships at Kiel for the canal-opening celebrations, making the visit an unmistakable display of readiness. At Heligoland Bight, Jellicoe reinforced the Harwich Force with the First Light Cruiser Squadron, battlecruisers, and five battleships, and Nottingham helped sink Mainz without suffering damage. She later supported the response to the Scarborough, Hartlepool, and Whitby raid, though she could not engage the withdrawing German force. At Dogger Bank she helped finish Blucher and escorted the damaged Lion home, tracing how new light cruisers worked beside battlecruisers in North Sea operations.
