Norway should not force one calibre ashore and afloat

Common ammunition offers a possible saving, but the cost of large guns argues against imposing one calibre on every Norwegian shore position.

Question

Should Norway harmonize the guns in its shore batteries with the large-calibre weapons on its coastal-defence ships?

Short answer

Not as a general rule. Shared logistics could help, but equipping every shore battery with large ship guns would be expensive; improved fjord hydrophones are a separate recommendation.

Notes

Common guns could simplify logistics if shore batteries and ships shared the same supply arrangements. The difficulty is cost: coastal-defence ships would carry some of the largest guns available, while many shore positions could use smaller weapons. The price difference between 6-inch and 11-inch guns becomes substantial when equipping numerous batteries. A separate recommendation is to update hydrophones throughout the fjords so Norway can hear vessels moving within them.
