Madagascar put Norway's amphibious lessons to work

The Royal Navy and junior army officers turned a failed campaign into landing-craft, equipment, and commando improvements used later in the war.

Notes

The operation in Madagascar gave Britain a chance to use equipment and methods refined after the Norwegian campaign. The Royal Navy treated Norway as a hard test of amphibious ideas developed during the 1920s and 1930s and identified a need for more landing craft and supporting equipment. Some senior army officers preferred to forget the failure, but junior officers worked to preserve its lessons. That institutional effort contributed to the Commandos and made a defeat productive for later combined operations.
