Norway in Britain's distant-blockade strategy

Norway mattered to Britain's distant blockade, trade protection, intelligence, and ability to divide resources between German and Italian threats.

Notes

Norway belonged within Britain's expected strategy of distant blockade. Containing German naval forces and protecting British trade had to be achieved economically because planners also expected Italy to enter the war and watched Franco's Spain closely. That wider resource problem made Norwegian intelligence, readiness, and political engagement especially important. Failing to cultivate Norway was inconsistent with Britain's own long-term maritime strategy.
