North Sea patrols could shrink German Atlantic reach

Without Norwegian bases or early-war snorkels, U-boats must spend more time submerged, while routes through the Channel and new French bases remain exposed to British patrols and bombing.

Notes

German submarines leaving home waters would face a heavily watched North Sea without the snorkels that appeared later in the war. More time submerged means lower speed, shorter range, and less time available in the Atlantic hunting area. In this geography, the GIUK gap becomes a Scotland-Norway gap, and reduced German reach could narrow or remove the mid-Atlantic air gap. Occupied French ports remain an alternative, but boats must still pass the Channel or exposed northern routes to reach them. Their bases would also be conspicuous construction targets while Britain no longer has to divide attention among the same range of Norwegian threats.
