Fleet operations continued between the famous battles

Patrols and raids kept the fleets active even when no major battle followed.

Notes

British and German fleets had to patrol because they could not know when the other side would act. Raids could damage an opponent or try to draw ships out of harbour. The Cuxhaven seaplane raid illustrates the Royal Navy's search for ways to pressure the German fleet. The French Navy also fought a continuing campaign against submarines in the Mediterranean. A history organized only around named battles leaves much of that work out of view.
