French North Africa becomes more than a naval anchorage: it provides territory for a Free French government, existing bases, and room to expand infrastructure. Its political importance to France makes it a plausible center of legitimacy after the metropolitan defeat. Atlantic convoys can unload directly at Moroccan or other North African ports instead of feeding every requirement through Britain and Gibraltar. Supplies for the Libyan front can then move along the coast and overland, shortening the exposed maritime leg.
