A 1944 Devonport refit equipped Enterprise to jam radio-controlled glide weapons, making her valuable protection for the Normandy assault forces. She led Assault Force U toward Utah Beach and engaged the Cherbourg defenses despite wounds to both her captain and commander. During the campaign she fired roughly 9,000 6-inch shells and required two overnight barrel changes at Portsmouth. The video estimates that fire as about 48 tons of high explosive, comparable to 64 Lancaster bomb loads, which conveys the sustained weight of naval gunfire support.
