Norfolk began the war assigned to the Home Fleet's powerful 18th Cruiser Squadron and joined searches for Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Admiral Scheer. Damage from a near-miss by U-47 sent her to Belfast for repairs; the same submarine had sunk Royal Oak inside Scapa Flow. Norfolk was bombed at Scapa Flow in March 1940 and repaired again on the Clyde. The work that followed added radar early in the war, giving the ship and crew time to become proficient before South Atlantic trade-protection duty.
