No Picnic presents the Falklands campaign from the perspective of the commander of 3 Commando Brigade. Thompson's personal photographs show command teams organising the operation rather than only the better-known combat imagery. The book also draws attention to landing platform docks and the practical support they supplied to the force ashore. The result is a command-level account of how an amphibious campaign was assembled, sustained, and directed.
