Chapter · 12:45-15:13

Nine cruisers in five classes followed the nuclear carriers

The class list and commissioning dates reveal a small, experimental escort force whose construction broadly followed Enterprise and the Nimitz-class carriers.

Notes

Long Beach, Bainbridge, Truxton, the two Californias, and the four Virginias made up nine ships spread across five classes. That fragmented program suggests repeated design steps rather than mass production of one settled cruiser type. The first three escorts appeared alongside Enterprise, while the later ships followed the arrival of the Nimitz class. A fifth Virginia-class ship was planned before cancellation. The chronology gives the program its central logic: nuclear carriers created a reason to retain nuclear-powered surface escorts able to share their strategic mobility.
