Nimitz committed every submarine he could find to the defensive plan. Twelve formed the Midway patrol group, three served as roving shortstops, and four watched north of Oahu against another Japanese approach. The deployments widened reconnaissance and interception coverage around both Midway and Hawaii. These patrol groups formed part of the same effort to gather the forces available for Midway's defence.
